This session explores evidence-based strategies for post-operative management in foot and ankle surgery. From procedure-specific protocols to managing complications, attendees will gain practical approaches to optimize healing, enhance outcomes, and strengthen continuity of care through multidisciplinary collaboration and the latest research.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

Apply evidence-based principles of post-operative management to optimize healing, minimize complications, and improve functional outcomes following foot and ankle surgery.

Integrate multidisciplinary strategies and effective communication with patients and the healthcare team to enhance continuity of care and meet quality-of-care standards.

Develop procedure-specific post-operative protocols for trauma, reconstructive, sports medicine, and arthroscopic cases, including appropriate weight-bearing progression and rehabilitation timelines.

Evaluate recent research for decision-making in advanced foot and ankle surgery, including wound care for high-risk patients.

Identify and manage common post-operative complications—infection, nonunion, hardware failure, and venous thromboembolism—using current literature and ABPM guideline recommendations.

About Dr. Sy

Dr. Sy discovered his path to podiatry through his love of sneakers and basketball. After an ACL injury shifted his focus from the court to medicine, he realized he could merge his lifelong fascination with the lower extremity and his passion for movement into a career in foot and ankle surgery. Today, as a reconstructive and sports medicine specialist, he helps patients regain mobility, relieve pain, and restore quality of life—finding the most rewarding part of his work in the immediate impact podiatry provides.

In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Sy serves as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Barry University, Chief of Podiatric Service and Residency Director at Jackson North Medical Center, and a clinical leader with the Special Olympics. He is also active in trauma and reconstructive surgery research, advancing evidence-based care while mentoring the next generation of podiatrists. Known for his leadership, education, and service, Dr. Sy remains committed to “lighting as many candles as possible”—sharing knowledge, inspiring colleagues, and enhancing the field of podiatry through both innovation and compassion.
